Yarn Couching Embroidery

November 1, 2022

Yarn Couching is a wonderful way of adding 3D elements to your embroideries. Yarn couching embroideries can be embroidered in different ways and styles. It is recommended to try the yarn you want to use to see it it’s suitable to use with the technique. Usually the yarn needs to be well spun or have a crochet look

Yarn Couching – Free Standing

These designs are sewn on water soluble stabilizer. The free standing designs can be placed on your sewn project to further embellish them.

  • Hoop water soluble stabilizer.
  • Prepare the machine as instructed below.
  • Embroider the design.
  • Cut away the excess stabilizer, leaving a small edge of stabilizer around the design.
  • Dissolve the stabilizer. Soak the design in lukewarm water and then leave it to dry.

Note: If you leave the design in the water for long. It will become soft. If you only soak it for a few seconds you will be able to shape the design.

Yarn Couching – On Fabric

You can easily create decorative yarn embellishment additions to your projects with the Yarn Couching Feet set. This can both be yarn-only designs and yarn added to an embroidery with fill patterns etc.

  • Hoop the stabilizer suitable for your project.
  • Prepare the machine as instructed below.
  • Embroider the design.
  • When the embroidery is completed you can either cut the yarn ends, or thread them on a darning needle and pull them to the back of the fabric.

Preparing the machine for couching

  • Thread the machine with thread that matches the yarn.
  • Attach the proper yarn guides for your machine to the notches under the handle on the rear side of the machine (see fig. 1).
  • Pull out as much yarn as you need from the ball of yarn and place it as shown in fi g. 2.
  • Place the yarn in the yarn guides (see fig. 2). It is very important that the yarn runs easily while you are sewing. You might need to guide the yarn through the yarn guides to make sure that it does not get twisted.
  • Choose Yarn Couching Foot 1 or 2, depending on the size of the yarn. Yarn Couching Foot 1 is suitable for most yarn sizes.
  • Thread the yarn from above through the hole in the foot using the yarn threader (see fig. 3). We recommend using yarn with even thickness. For best result the yarn should fill the hole in the foot and still run easily through it.
  • Snap on the foot to the machine (see fig. 4).
